Pens 'Stache Tracker 2010 - FEBRUARY

Not only are the Pens motivating players at the beginning of every month with they newly employed "Moustache Shootout" competition, but it has also turned into a big point of interest among us fans!!

Today, fans PACKED the Iceoplex in Southpointe to witness which player would be the next to grow the newly fashionable players stache

Since this is a monthly occurrence and one that fans are so interested in, Ive decided to create a "Stache Watch" to announce the "loser" as well as to keep an eye on how the facial hair is coming along throughout the month ... ENJOY!!!

But FIRST, let's take a moment of silence as the outgoing stache man shaves off his moustache ... R.I.P - Billy G's "Up-and-Coming Porn Star" Stache or, simply, "The Guerin" (photo courtesy of Lexie H.).

FEBRUARY'S "LOSER" - Ruslan Fedotenko ("BEFOREstache")

"LOSER" QUOTE
- "I already did it once so it’s easy," Fedotenko said. "On me you probably won’t even be able to tell until the last week."

MY THOUGHTS - SWEET ... the invisible stache (aka ... "The Fedotenko") ... can't wait to see this one!!!

Underwood and Fisher Make First Public Appearance Since Engagement

This past Monday was the Ottawa Senators' charity ball, "Bell Sens Soirée" and it wasn't any of the players that were getting all of the attention, according to cbcsports.ca (courtesy of above photo).

When Fisher stepped up to the microphone to say a few words about the event with Underwood at his side, the couple drew machine-gun like volleys of flashbulbs. After his remarks, the couple struck a cuddly pose together for the
cameras.

At one point in the evening, Fisher took a turn as dealer at one of the blackjack tables.
The event was held at the Hilton Lac-Leamy Convention Centre in Gatineau, Quebec and raised $325,000 for the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, CSSS de Gatineau Foundation, Royal Ottawa Hospital Foundation, Queensway Carleton Hospital, Roger's House and Rotary Home.

When asked recently, Carrie acknowledged her hopes for a small wedding, but told the source that it wasn't very likely to happen.

Where My Ladies At?

THESE ARE OUR STORIES
(How I Became a [Female] Hockey Fan)!

Most people start their story by saying that they were attending a Penguins game during the dark ages of few wins. My story starts last November.

I began to take interest in the Penguins when they made their run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 when my dad, born and raised in Pittsburgh, had them on the TV every other day. I'd sit, and I'd watch, but wouldn't really get excited about them. I didn't even watch game 6 of the Finals. Despite this, I really liked the thought of hockey, so for my 16th birthday, my uncle got me tickets to a game on my birthday. We went and it was probably the best experience of my life. I loved it.

Two weeks prior to my birthday and the game, I had torn the ACL in my right knee on my first day of basketball practice and was scheduled to have surgery on December 23rd, just in time for Christmas... Now, I was confined to the couch for the next two weeks, and what's on TV almost every other day than the Penguins? I watched them religiously, and I'm pretty sure illegally on the internet. It took my mind off my limp and useless leg lying in front of me. When school started back up right after New Year's Eve, the Penguins were beginning to flail and fall quick.

My high school basketball team, where I was supposed to play Varsity for the second year, as a sophomore, was also beginning to fall to pieces without me, their inside presence, and a new coach. To take my mind off not being able to play, I watched hockey, and rooted on the Penguins through their slump, when they hired Dan Byslma, and when it looked like they wouldn't make the playoffs.

The Penguins made the playoffs as I was cleared to play again. We succeeded together; as I was getting better, they won 8 straight games or so. I loved the fact that they, a hockey team that had no idea I existed, helped me through my injury, or so I thought. Hockey kept my mind off of what was really happening. I made myself my own world and submersed myself to escape from everything. Now, I'm a diehard Penguins fan. I stalk the players after the games and I make sure I know what's happening at all times. I followed the off-season and wore black when Rob Scuderi was traded to the Kings. Female fans are known as puck bunnies, but I'd like to see any man one-up me on Penguin facts.

Jenna
AWESOME, Jenna!! I hope you're doing better now (it sounds like you are) and I hope your team is doing well too (still playing basketball, I assume). We all need outlets especially during rough patches - we've all been there ... teams, just as people, go through that too. I'm glad to hear that you stuck by our boys, Jenna, and gained some inspiration at the same time ... THANKS for sharing this with us, Jenna - it's a great story!!

Don't forget, if you wish to submit your story, I kindly ask that you
email them directly to me so they don't end up being repetitive for some of the readers. Also, if you don't want me to include your name, please let me know that as well (what I'll normally do is put your first name and last initial if I have it OR just your screen name).

I also want to let you know I LOVE these stories (and so do alot of our readers) - I've always found it interesting no matter who the fan, so I'm enjoying ALL OF THIS IMMENSELY!! KEEP THEM COMING, but I ask that you email them please - THANKS!!!

Also, I ask that you please BE PATIENT as I'm still receiving TONS of stories in addition to the ones that are already posted in some of the "comments" sections here that I'm hoping to re-post. If you sent in a story, it will eventually be on the blog - I promise!! ; ) JUST BE SURE TO KEEP THEM COMING (the more the better!)!!

The Pensblog KNOWS Hockey Fans (Including Female VS Puck Bunny)

ROCK ON Pensblog dudes!!

I'm just a tad bit late with this one (I found it the day they posted it, but haven't had a chance to work on posting it here until now), but the guys over at the infamous Pensblog just "released" their very own "Guide to Hockey Fans" which includes a pretty "mark-on" [scary] description of the "puck bunny" that also includes the GREAT LINE: "Please do not make the mistake that all female hockey fans are puck bunnies. Doing so will probably get you kicked in the balls."

Nothing more needs said there - PERFECT!! ; D

CLICK HERE to read the rest of the post (I've already included the "Puck Bunny" section below):

Puck Bunnies

Her signs will likely feature glitter. So will her eyes.

Penguins puck bunnies know precisely five players on the team: Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Letang and Fleury. They will always rank them according to relative dreaminess.
During pre-game warmups, they rush down to the glass, convinced that Jordan Staal will be plowing their sod that night if only they can make eye contact.

Please do not make the mistake that all female hockey fans are puck bunnies.
Doing so will probably get you kicked in the balls.

How to identify this fan:

If she emits a piercing shriek that leaves your ears bleeding every time the PA guy says "Sidney Crosby", you're sitting next to a Puck Bunny.

REASON #58
He's the NHL's "Third Star" this week

Crosby notched eight points (three goals, five assists) in three games, helping the Penguins (32-20-1) record victories over a pair of Atlantic Division foes. He tied a career high with six points (two goals, four assists) in a 6-4 victory over the New York Islanders Jan. 19, tallied one goal in a 6-3 loss to the Washington Capitals Jan. 21 and recorded one assist in a 2-1 win at Philadelphia Jan. 24 -- his 53rd point in 31 regular-season games against the Flyers (24-29--53). Crosby ranks among NHL leaders in goals (T-second, 33), points (fourth, 65) and shots (fourth, 194).

Say Cheese (While You Take Your Clothes Off)!

This has been the talk of the internet since yesterday when the pictures were posted on Orland Kurtenblog - featuring Chicago Blackhawk players Patrick Kane and John Madden in what looks to be a pretty fun-filled night (so OF COURSE we have to cover it here!).

The post (in letter-to-the-athlete form) simply talks about the fact that athletes are human and it being completely understandable for them to partake in human activities that we all have or wished we had taken part in during one time or another in our lives, but that these athletes should think a little more when it comes to their choice to pose when someone pulls out a camera during these "questionable" activities.

I mean, if you knew and trusted the people you were with during a fun night out, wouldn't you feel comfortable enough to do stupid things and then be agreeable to pose for pictures while doing it (and at the time, since you trusted those people, you felt comfortable enough in the fact that it was just understood that the pictures were to remain between you?)? I'm sure we've all been there and can relate to that; however, the only problem is the fact that it only takes ONE time or ONE person for it to get in the wrong hands at the wrong time. OR PERHAPS I'm giving them a little bit too much credit and the boys were just stupid enough to pick up trash that would smear this shit all over ... in that case, WISE UP guys!!!

Of course there was the debate about whether or not the photos were legit. I'm not going to argue that here because all possible scenerios and explanations have been hashed out elsewhere aside from the fact that I'm not an expert, but what I will say is that whether or not these photos are real, I believe that what they do is their choice and they have a right to do whatever they wish (and their money allows) them to do in their free time.

But my main point is ... so what?! It's none of my business!!! And seriously, some of us or the people we know and hang around could easily have our faces pasted on these pictures and no one would think twice or debate about it (we've quite possibly been in similar situations ourselves). It's just unfortunate for these athletes that the only difference is the fact that they're recognizeable and in the public eye (but that was something that I'm sure they understood came along with their choice to become a professional athlete). [LATE EDIT] Although we all have consequences to contend with no matter how different they may be (for John Madden, it would seem he has some explaining to do to his wife and their child which is a shameful situation to be in for him / heartbreaking for his family, and still not for me to judge).

I'm not condoning or condemning what these players do (and they're not immune to making big-ass mistakes), but I don't think it's necessary to analyze them, their actions, or their choice of entertainment in their spare time (if Kane or any other player lucky enough to be in the NHL wants to take a chance of messing up a golden opportunity, that's his problem and not mine) -- let's see ... who's missing from these pics? [*cough*] Sharp [*cough*] Toews [*cough*]!
: D

I don't know about you, but I have enough in my life to keep me busy without worrying about someone else; namely, looking at gorgeous hockey players and doing "research" for this blog - I have my hands FULL enough with that!! I mean, when I look at these pictures all I'm thinking is "MAN, hockey players have nice bodies - what LUCKY girls!"
; P

[LATE EDIT] The thing that I found most amusing, aside from all the views people have taken over this situation and how much coverage it's been getting, is one writer's perspective of it being all about the Blackhawks 'tough guy' image (i.e., they don't look like rugged hockey players in these pictures but rather a cross between the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync). To that I must hang my head in shame [rolls eyes!]!! This guy is a credited Chicago journalist and he gets paid for that shit?!!! The media is definitely going down-hill quickly (soon they might catch up to the likes of Kane and the rest)!!! : D

THANKS for the "tip," MM!! : )

Operation: Behind Enemy Lines

Our fellow Penguins fans are THE BEST!!! Cases in point ...

THANKS to both Lexie H. and Melany M.for sharing the following story of their courageous trek to pretty unfriendly territory, Philadelphia, just to watch our boys play the Flyers last Sunday afternoon (and pictures to go along with it which always makes it that much more FUN!)!!

So, first off never ask Philly natives for directions, i swear we went in circles most of the time! But we did made it there! When we got there we saw a group of penguin fans, so Melany rolled down her window and yelled Pens Fans, Yeah!" and they invited us over and we all got some group pictures. We then continued our journey into the box office at the arena to get our magical wristbands that got us into the Lexus Club, and what we would soon find out is between the exercise room and the locker room for the Penguins. We walked down to the Lexus club and got to see the where the Flyers are interviewed and whatnot Then continued to find our friendly little usher guy who was talking to us saying how if any Flyer fans give us trouble to let him know and he will take care of it when...*GASP* Sidney Crosby, Pascal Dupuis, and Matt Cooke walked right by us, I was just standing there like 'Oh My God is this a dream?', My mom was just said "Hey Sid" and Melany had been facing the other way when my mom had said that and was like "WHAT?!", in the meantime Matt walked like right beside us! And they are all in their shorts because they're playing soccer :) Then maybe a minute later Mel was on her knees trying to catch her breath, i am pretty much just sitting on the floor shocked and then Billy Guerin goes by...then Skoula(Melany did not know this because she was trying to stand up and almost ran into him and Alex Goligoski and Alex Goligoski laughed at us, as i managed to cough out a "good luck!" We stayed there a little longer and then decided to go take a breather and Tweet and Facebook what had just happened, when our friendly little usher came over and says "now, you didn't hear this from me but...if you stand over there with me and you can speak up on your own you can get their autographs..." So we went back over with our usher guy and waited, and Billy G came out and i had to get his attention because Mel was too excited so it went like this..."Billy G?(in high pitched voice) will you sign my jersey?"..."sure"..."Thank you Billy"..."No Problem" and then he had to find Melany to give her sharpie back, and then Godard came out so i was like "Eric could you please sign this?"..."Sure thing!(all smiley)", and then i turn around for maybe one second and turn to see Jordan just sprinting across the room! LOL! Then Eaton was walking by and i was like "Good Luck Mark!" and he look right at me smiles and says "Thank you" , then Mike Rupp walks by i say "Good Luck Rupp!" and get no response...he comes back i say "GOOD LUCK MIKE!" and he looks at me chuckles and says "Thank you" :) Then Dupuis walks by and Melany goes "oh...uh... mmm... ugh... I hope you feel better soon Duper!" and he said thanks, and I thought he was through the doors and Melany said "Wow, those were some tight shorts!" And he heard it! LOL! Then there was Craig Adams Melany was like "Yeah Craig Adams!" and he just shook his head and laughed! Geno smiled when Melany told him good luck and Melany freaked because it was the last penguin that she needed to talk to! When they were done playing soccer, Cookie came out, looked like he was gonna come our way, saw all the people that had gathered, and quickly turned and went straight to the locker room. Then in warm ups Dupuis had this big goofy smile on his face when he saw me and then he waved *it was AH-mazing!!! Then Melany gave her Billy G autographed ticket to the little boy behind us*

All i have to say after this trip is that the boys MUST know us by now! :) (they just don't know our names, LOL)

~ Lexie

THANKS also to Maureen
, who also travelled to Philadelphia to attend the same game (separate from Lexie and Mel), and sent me this story along with a link to a few pictures:
I was lucky enough to get to go to the Pens vs Flyers game today at the Wachovia. I had glass seats on the end the Pens shot twice it, it was awesome. I saw both of our goals get scored!

After the game, a few of the guys skated over to wave to us (as we were wearing our jerseys), and give us a thumbs up. I was able to get some awesome pics, so I thought I would share a few with you and the ladies on the board. I have more too...

Crosby [and Malkin] Picture[s] of the Week

With the 2010 Olympics quickly approaching, the NHL's focus is slowly beginning to turn to men's Olympic hockey. For the past few days I've noticed new advertisements for men's hockey Olympic gear / merchandise.

This week's picture is our beautiful captain sporting his Team Canada jersey and looking mighty fine as always, I might add! Malkin also has one, so I thought I'd include that one too (because I believe there are just a few fans of his who read the blog as well!)!! ; P

ENJOY!!

What's Better Than Hockey? MORE Hockey!!

TONS OF THANKS to GhostWalker40 for uploading the new Penguins Verizon commercial to youtube featuring Sid, Max, Gonch, and Geno ... GOOD STUFF (LOVE this)!!! This was the first time I've seen this one, so I'm assuming it premiered during yesterday's game (there's another one with the Caps (Ovi) and the Flyers (Richards, Hartnell) at the airport which is actually pretty cool too even though it features a bunch of douchebags!)!!

"They're not leaving."

Honestly, I'd camp out at the Igloo if I could!!!

Pens and Pins

Can't forget to post this ... the Pens held their 2nd annual charity bowling event benefitting the "Make-a-Wish" foundation last Friday and of course it was a success. From the sounds of it, both the kids and the players had a great time (Sid and Billy G. were the most popular at the event)!! ENJOY the video (CLICK HERE for the photo gallery)!!

That's RIGHT, We Actually DO Know Hockey!!!

We're finally getting due props!!!

I found this on a Chicago Blackhaws blog thanks to my "google alerts." It's from a post on Second City Hockey called "As Long As They Don't Take My Seat" which discusses "bandwagon fans"(in the comments section). The comment was made by a female fan, but it sounds like she's a little fearful of coming right out and saying she thinks the players are attractive by what she posts:

Also found thanks to Twitter, the slightly scary (but they do actually know hockey) “Hockey for the Ladies” blog had a post on “Western Conference Hottie” Duncan Keith yesterday. Find it if you dare… KofC
Slightly scary? Find it if you dare? Come on, sweetie, it's OK to be a female fan and allow yourself to enjoy the sights as well as the game ... there's NO SHAME in it if you know hockey and aren't there to pick up a husband - there's always a place for you at HftL (we really don't bite!) and we'll welcome you openly!!

Her comment did stir up some curiousity for the site, so we may have some new readers as well (THANK YOU, KofC), so WELCOME!!! We even have a ECEC suggestion ... gotta remember Brent Sopel. ; )

this is me being helpful and using Google
- the Trib piece
- the
Hockey for the Ladies piece (let me put my girl hat on for a minute here— why the fuck do they have a page for Patrick Kane? Mind-boggling.) @ChiBlackhawks
Help please with Hockey for the Ladies site?
Thanks for the link. Just went there to find some inform on my favorite Blackhawk, Brent Sopel. Can't seem to find him anywhere. Maybe in the archives? EvilClown
But PLEASE let me educate a few of the Blackhawk (and possibly other) fans commenting on the post that women ARE NOT "only into hockey because of the cute young players!" Are we, ladies?!! Nope!! I (and the readers of this blog) LOVE hockey just as much as the next fan!!

Where My Ladies At?

THESE ARE OUR STORIES
(How I Became a [Female] Hockey Fan)!
I actually used to watch with my dad when I was little. When I couldnt sleep my dad would sit on the couch with me and we would watch hockey usually the Habs.

I just recently got back into the sport. I was dating someone who was a huge Pens fan. I wasnt sure at first but once I started to learn some of the rules and the premis of hockey. I became hooked and the Pens became my team. I love the way hockey is played. Everyone who plays has so much heart and that is what I love about it. I am slowly learning the history of hockey and it is making me fall even more for the sport.

I know that it isnt really an exciting story but really hockey in a way saved me. I was going through a hard [time] and hockey it self gave me something else to focus on...so I owe a thank you to alot of players that I have watched over the past year.

- Meg M. (justawriter1986)
Another story involving a girl watching hockey with her dad - I love the fact that girls are able to spend time enjoying hockey with their fathers. I'm glad to hear that hockey gave you a diversion, Meg, and hope that things are better for you now!! There's nothing like a good hockey game to make your cares disappear ... it really is easy to get engrossed in the game especially when the players are as exciting as they are now ... THANKS for sharing your story, Meg!!

Don't forget, if you wish to submit your story, I kindly ask that you
email them directly to me so they don't end up being repetitive for some of the readers. Also, if you don't want me to include your name, please let me know that as well (what I'll normally do is put your first name and last initial if I have it OR just your screen name).

REASON #57
He makes sure to "collect the puck"

(after teammates' milestones)

Seen here (above), Sidney gives 19 year old Alexandre Pechurskiy the game puck after playing in his first NHL game last Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks.

This wasn't the first time Sid has taken it upon himself to do this (I've seen him do it a few times before) and I think it's quite considerate of him ... not to mention wildly adorable!!! I'm sure it's something his team mates (and Pechurskiy) appreciates as well!!

THANKS to Melany M. for posting a link to an article relating to this / Pechurskiy in the comments (I posted it here for "easy access")!!! Great article -

Western Conference Hottie: Duncan Keith (Chicago Blackhawks)

IMPORTANT HOCKEY STUFF: Keith was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2nd round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft as the 54th overall selection. He signed with Chicago prior to the 2003–04 season and spent his first two seasons after junior in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the team affiliate Norfolk Admirals, logging heavy minutes and scoring 51 points in 154 games total. He got his first call up to the NHL on October 5, 2005 against the Anaheim Ducks.

Following two seasons in the AHL, he made the Blackhawks squad out of the 2006 training camp. He made an immediate impact on the club by averaging over 23 minutes of ice time in 81 games that season. At the conclusion of the 2005–06 season he was rewarded for his stellar play by the Blackhawks who signed him to a five-year contract extension. In 2006–07, he played in all 82 games for the Blackhawks and once again led the team in average ice time at 23 minutes. He had two goals and 31 points, while leading the team in blocked shots with 148. For the 2007–08 season, Keith saw even more ice time after injuries wracked the Blackhawks' defensive core. By mid-January, he was averaging 24:31 ice time per game and had a team leading plus/minus of +14. He was rewarded for this effort by a selection to the 2008 NHL All Star Game. He finished the season with a +30 plus minus rating despite being on a non-playoff team.

On October 8, 2008, Keith was named an alternate captain along with Patrick Sharp [previously on HftL]. He helped a rejuvenated Blackhawks team led by young forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane [previously on HftL] back into the playoffs, making it to the conference finals, where they were eliminated by the Detroit Red Wings (aka Satans spawn). On December 3, 2009, the Blackhawks announced Keith's contract extension simultaneously with Toews and Kane. Keith's deal was a 13-year, $72 million contract, making it the richest in team history, surpassing Marian Hossa's [gag] 12-year, $62.8 million contract signed several months prior in August 2009.

REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF: The best thing about him, he knows how to do "hockey hair" just right. Although it's a toss up if I like him better with "Letang-style sex-hair" or with it cut off short. He does both so very well. When you get past the hair, your in for a real treat with the pretty blue eyes which kind of sneak up on you because you're not expecting them. He's 6'1, 196lbs. and does great things to improve the appearance of a baseball cap.

And of course, we've got this (several moments, will make your eyeballs nearly fall out) -

There's this which, although short and sweet, is definitely "stimulating."

Lists his parents as the people he most admires ... His biggest pet peeve is second hand smoke ... Supports the Teammates for Kids charity ... His favorite television show is “Hockey Night in Canada” ... His favorite food is steak and his least favorite food is peas [whoa, what did peas ever do to you, Mr. Keith? Well, there goes my image of perfection, he's picking on my favorite vegetable... Oh well, he's pretty to look at, so I'll let it slide...]

Crosby Pictures of the Week

This week's pictures are courtesy of the lovely little "puck bunny" that showed up to the game last Wednesday in Calgary complete with a white dress and veil and a sign that read "MARRY ME SIDNEY." [If you'd like to read more about it, CLICK HERE].

The message she was sending went a little bit deeper than the sign she held and even though she may know the "in's-and-out's" of the game of hockey or could analyze last Wednesday's game with the best of them, her appearance told a different story superficially and we all placed her in the steretypical category we're all too familiar with. I truly mean no harm to her or her character (I'm sure she's a lovely girl that could have as much "hockey smarts" as the next guy); however, by putting herself out there like that she made an impression ... one that she may not be concerned about, but I am (and we all, as female fans, should be)!!

THIS, ladies, is "public enemy #1" to all of us ... THIS is the very reason that we as females have such a hard time being taken seriously by men (as well as other female fans). So, thank you Ms. Blondie Bride, for having us females take two steps back when the day before we worked so hard to take the first step forward to begin with.

YES, I'll be the first to admit that I find the players attractive (for crying out loud, I have an entire blog dedicated to it), but what sets me, along with alot of other female fans, apart from this stereotype is the fact that I wouldn't show up to a game (or watch one) being more concerned about having Sid or any other player notice me than actually watching the game itself. I watch the game of hockey for the enjoyment of the sport and appreciate the talent of the players on the ice and not in the hopes of finding myself a husband.

On the lighter side of this story, here are other pictures throughout the rest of the Pens western trip of guys who decided to poke fun at this young lady (quite amusing and I'm sure the guys on the team were entertained as well!)!!! Actually, these two men represent what the majority (if not ALL) of the men thought after seeing the girl show up to the Flames game last Wednesday night - a big joke.

AND FOR GOOD MEASURE (to end on a positive note) ... I'll throw in a picture of Sid because this post is supposed to be about him after all!! ; )

Where My Ladies At?

THESE ARE OUR STORIES
(How I Became a [Female] Hockey Fan)!
My parents attended their first Penguins game in 1983. They fell in love with the game almost immediately and continued to cheer on their Pens. After my sister and I were born, my parents decided that they wouldn't force us to become hockey fans; we would choose whether or not we wanted to be sports fans at all. However, my parents continued to watch hockey games on television and I would often find myself curled up on the couch with my dad yelling at Jagr and Straka to shoot! There were times when my mother would force me to bed because a game was going into overtime and I had school in the morning. I would put up the biggest fights trying to stay up and would sometimes demand a final score in the morning.

I continued my support for the Penguins even when hope seemed lost, and eventually found renewed faith. Today, I'm a 20 year old hockey nut who has to prove to my male friends that I'm not just into the sports for the players. I'm at the age where people don't give me a chance to explain my story. They make assumptions and label me because I am female. It doesn't matter that I can out-stat most of my male friends, or that I'm helping my other female friends learn the game, I'm a young woman, so I must love the game because "the players are just sooooo hot!" It's frustrating, but I get through it knowing that at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what anyone else says. I'm a true fan, and I'm proud of it.

Jenn M.
Good for you Jenn! We all put up with these stereotypes as women which is pretty unfair when you think about it. It's one of the many battles of being a female in a "man's world" and one of the various reasons I thought these regular posts were important - so that we can all be proud of our stories and realize that there's more to us as women than finding the men of hockey attractive. I guess the main thing is to learn to be comfortable with who you are as a fan and then take it from there. Of course the players are attractive, but that's not why a true fan - male or female - watches (although it doesn't hurt either and I'm not ashamed to admit it!)!! Thanks for sharing your story, Jenn!!

REASON #56
He Holds Press Conferences
(when there's too big a demand by the media for his time)

WHAT A GEM!!! Although, I'm sure his manager or PR person has a lot to do with this ... STILL, he had to agree to it, I'm pretty sure!!

For his swing through western Canada, there has been a big demand for a minute of his time by the media (for whatever reason, he's quite a star in those parts - HAH ; P) and instead of turning anyone down, they scheduled him for a press conference and answered all the questions then.

“It was something that I expected,” Crosby said. “There are the extra things that you do. I would say by the end of the trip it’s a little bit more draining than a typical road trip would be, but that is to be expected. It is something that is part of it.

Western Conference Hotties: Tanner Glass (Vancouver Canucks)

We get a request this week and it's a good thing too since I'm extra busy again this week; I need all the help I can get. So if I'm missing some Western Conference Hotness I should be giving some attention to, please ladies, let me know about it.

This weeks victim is Tanner Glass of the VAN Canucks. He comes to us at the suggestion of an HftL reader who, as she puts it ... "was putzing around on hockey sights and I stumbled across Tanner Glass from the Canucks and just fell in love!" I can't say that I blame her.

IMPORTANT HOCKEY STUFF: Glass moved from his hometown Craven, Saskatchewan, at 16 years old to play Junior A in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCHL) with the Nanaimo Clippers. He was drafted 265th overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers out of junior. The following season, in 2003–04, he joined the college hockey ranks with Dartmouth College of the NCAA, where he played a full four years, captaining the team as a senior.

Upon the completion of his fourth and final college year, graduating from Dartmouth with a history degree, Glass played four games in the AHL with the Panthers' minor league affiliate, the Rochester Americans, making his professional hockey debut. He then split the 2007–08 season between the Americans and the Panthers, playing 41 games in his rookie NHL season. He played his first NHL game on November 12, 2007 versus the Carolina Hurricanes and scored his first NHL goal on January 22, 2008 against Ray Emery of the Ottawa Senators.

Assigned to the Americans to start the 2008–09 season, Glass injured his left ear early in the campaign with a torn ear drum, as well as a damaged labrum and bursa sac. He managed to play 44 games with Rochester while also being called up for three games with Florida, but was not tendered a fying offer in the off-season by the Panthers.

Becoming an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2009, Glass was signed by the Vancouver Canucks to a two-way deal worth $500,000 at the NHL level. With early injuries to Canucks forwards during training camp, Glass made the lineup for the start of the season as the thirteenth forward. He played his first game with the Canucks on October 7 in a 7–1 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

After 10 games with the Canucks, Glass scored his first goal with the Canucks against the Colorado Avalanche.

REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF: I'm not even fighting it ... this is the hottest thing about him --

Aside from that he's about 6'1" 205lbs of hockey-playing dynamite. How sexy is it that he pretty much tears Schenn apart? Who doesn't love a guy who can and does defend himself and his teammates?!!!

There's also this below, illustrating that he's a pretty cool guy and DEFINITELY a hard worker [which coincidentally I feel translates into a "hard worker"... hint, hint].

We all have to thank our lucky stars, ahem, sorry about that, Canucks. For Canadian hockey media. Because we've got the King of the Rink feature from the Canucks website. I know how some girls feel about the mullet that he wore for oh-so-long, but there is definitely something special about a guy who can pull it off.

Say 'Goodbye' to Alyonka

I wasn't aware of this until a few days ago, but it looks like the star of The Penguins Show and the girl who brought us video of her cooking with Malkin is leaving the Penguins organization. I, for one, am a little saddened by the news and, to be honest, I was a little leary of her when she first came onto the scene. At that time, I didn't realize her hockey background, but after seeing her over and over again at the games we'd go to at the Igloo and watching a few of her shows on PensTV, I can say that she won me over!!

I follow her on Twitter as well as Facebook, so I thought it was odd that she would mention her being at home or with her family long after Christmas vacation and then the last game we went to, she wasn't there (it was only Katie O'), so it made me curious to know what was going on. So I watched her YouTube video diary that she posted on January 7th. I'm posting it here in case some of you have been wondering and are interested in knowing the story like I was (no "juicy details" or anything like that, but at least you get it from her and a little bit of the 'why').

I really wish her the best. She brought a lot of good to Pittsburgh, especially with the Penguins organization (as far as programming and getting us "behind the scenes" of the team) which I genuinely appreciate. I know alot of fans, not just me, will miss her smiling face and awesome personality (you can tell just how genuine she is!).

Crosby Pictures of the Week

Out of all of them, the top one is my FAVORITE!!! I really enjoy when you can see the intensity on his face (and in his actions!)!!

Here we have Sid pleading his case once again. He's been doing that alot lately probably because

Eastern Conference Eye Candy: Luca Caputi (Pittsburgh Penguins)

I'm certain it hasn't escaped any of your attention that Luca Caputi is fairly "easy on the eyes," so choosing him as our next Eye Candy is pretty much a no-brainer!!!

HOCKEY FACTOR:

Caputi began his hockey career in the minors for the Mississauga IceDogs (OHL) playing for four seasons (within which the IceDogs moved and became the Niagara IceDogs) - his final season being his most successful with 51 goals (ranking him third in the league) and 111 points (ranking him fourth in the league).

He was named to the OHL Second All-Star team in 2008.

He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fourth round of the 2007 Entry Draft (111th overall).

Currently, in his second appearance on the Penguins NHL roster to fill the spot left while Chris Kunitz recovers from surgery, Cuputi has two point (1G, 1A) in three games, including his first goal of the season against the Atlanta Thrashers on January 5th; is averaging 11:56 minutes of ice time per game; has 26 points (13 G, 13A) in 36 games with the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Baby Pens (AHL); appeared in five games, posting one goal and four penalty minutes for the Penguins last season.

HOTNESS FACTOR:

Since Caputi is new to the NHL (and not much is written about them during their time in the AHL / OHL other than 'stats'), I couldn't find much about him as far as his personal life, but all we need to know may be what we see of him on the ice. He's a pretty sizeable forward (6'3, 209 pounds) and can keep up with Malkin on the second line.

His given name is Gianluca [Luca] Caputi.

Look at him and look at his team photo (above, not to the right) ... is that shadows created from his cheekbones or is that some type of zaney mustache / sideburns combo he has going on there?!! And he kept it for picture day?? BADASS!!!

He must also be a little bit of a "rebel-rouser" as he was reassigned to the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL) last season in March 2009 to be disciplined for "violation of team rules." According to the Citizens Voice Penguins Insider blog, that wasn't the first for Caputi to be disciplined (first offense was in January 2009). My question at the time was, "doesn't he know how good he has it? He's playing with the Penguins organization and was lucky enough to be called up - that was stupid!" Anyway, here's what HC Todd Reirden had to say about that incident:
"It’s a violation of team rules and that’s how it’s going to stay for now."

"It was a policy the players understood. … I’ve been in discussion with (Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma) during the matter as I am with the entire organization. I think our players understand how it will be dealt with now."

How long will Caputi and D'Aversa's stay in Wheeling? "That will depend upon how they do and how their work ethic and attitudes are at that level."

"In this case, the message we want to send to our players is it’s a privilege to be under an NHL contract, a privilege to be in an NHL organization, a privilege to be in the American Hockey and more importantly, it’s a privilege to be in Wilkes-Barre, which we think is the best place to play in the American Hockey League. For now, he’s been sent to Wheeling to learn from there."
DAMN STRAIGHT it's a privilege!! Honestly, I'd say he must've got his shit together to be recalled by the Penguins once again to fill in for Kunitz (good for him!)!! He's lucky (not many people get more than one second chance!)!!

It probably wouldn't surprise you, after reading the above, that he's a pretty good fighter that won't back down and has a few fights under his belt in the OHL and AHL. His latest was on December 9th VS Jonathan Sigalet (Syracuse Crunch). See more on the fight including video HERE at hockeyfights.com.

Sidney's NEW Tim Hortons Commercial

LOTS of endorsements by Crosby these days (almost as much as Talbot!)!!

Here's the latest from Tim Hortons -- it's a really cool commercial (THANKS to all of you who emailed me links to let me know about it!)!!!

ENJOY!!

I also found an article about it HERE.

Where My Ladies At?

THESE ARE OUR STORIES
(How I Became a [Female] Hockey Fan)!

My Dad has played hockey from when he was a little kid, through high school, and even now on adult, street hockey leagues. Since I am an only child and my Mom has zero interest in hockey, he needed someone to bond over the sport with him and started to take me to Pens games when I was 7. Thanks to his job, he would get season tickets and surprise me all of the time with hockey tickets, even in the middle of the week. Those nights of driving into Pittsburgh with him, just the two of us and sharing peanuts together at the games remain such an important part of my childhood. I'll never forget how cold walking up the hill to Mellon Arena is or how slippery it can be either. I remember not really understanding the game at first but loving every minute of it just because it meant one-on-one time with my Dad when he would talk defensive strategy with me (even though I had no clue what he was talking about).

It didn't take me long to start loving the game though. Watching games on TV is still fun but being in the crowds is like no other feeling. I LOVED getting there early and watching the team warm up and flick pucks at the fans. I was also a little too interested in the fighting and brutality of the game. I would actually sit and hope that a fight would happen because it always gave the team a boost of morale.

This was all during the late 90's and so I remember the good old days of Darius Kasparaitis kicking the crap out of people and Kovalev moon-walking after a hat trick. (Kasparaitis was actually my first favorite player). I was also there, when Mario first came back to the game and scored a goal less than 30 seconds after hitting the ice. We even have a picture of that goal framed in my house because you can see my Dad and I in the background freaking out together.

So I guess my Dad was the original reason that I fell in love with hockey. I already idolized him so it was natural for me to want to love something that was important to him. However, as I've grown up and moved away from Pittsburgh to go to college, hockey has been something that ties me back to my family and the city that I love so much. It's special to me because I know how much the Pens organization appreciates it fans and that I know first hand how the game can become a central part of a relationship between two people. Plus, above all else, hockey is the most fun game to watch in person OR on TV.
Rachel
This is a really touching storing ... the bond between a girl and her "daddy" is one of the most precious and what a wonderful thing to bond over (it reminds me of me and my dad although our connection was basketball and his teaching me how to play for the girls team in high school --- I'm an only child too, so I was the only one he could pass down his interest to!)!! Those players bring back memories too ... LOVE both Kasparitis and Kovy (I just read an article about his doing the moonwalk not to long ago!)!! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing such a personal story, Rachel!!

REASON #55
He's Got Malkin's Back!

(and you can probably say the same for Malkin!)

I figured I better 'clean' up my act and get a little more serious this week seeing as how the past few "Let Me Count the Ways" posts have been kinda naughty (and OH SO FUN!)!!! ; )

My inspiration for this one was from my reading an article this week in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review about how Malkin blames himself for the last loss. Of course they went to Sid for his side of it and his quote couldn't be MORE PERFECT and made me fall in love with him even more than I already do (which is why I started this weekly post in the first place!)!!!

"I don't think he's getting asked so many questions if we win a few games," Crosby said. "That's kind of the natural thing; when you struggle as a player and you start losing, guys like us get looked at. That's fine.

"I don't think he's got to change a whole lot. He's one shot away from being back where he wants to be. He's playing good, and it's just got to go in for him."

I have NO IDEA how I've never seen this picture of the two of them, but ISN'T IT ADORABLE?!!!

Orpik - Like You've NEVER Seen Him!!

I am really beginning to like Brooks Orpik more and more everyday!! I've always felt he was an awesome defenseman (FREE CANDY, anyone?!), but the more I read about him, the more appealing he becomes as a human being ... he seems to be a really great, genuine guy!!! I especially like the fact that he says exactly what's on his mind (FSN has said that on more than one occasion).

The latest article I read was the one in Maniac Magazine (the one I did a post on yesterday with Talbot). Well, thanks to Sunshine36616, I was finally able to see Orpik's article and if you haven't read it, YOU SHOULD - good stuff!! My favorite part is this quote:

AND this (ALL HP's have to have large butts - it's just the nature of the beast ... just think about how they work those muscles on the ice to skate, eh!) ...

Luckily, I was able to screen-cap some pics too (he DOES have a fun side!)!!!
