Eastern Conference Eye Candy: Derek Roy (Buffalo Sabres)

This week's EC eye candy is part of the Buffalo Sabres. He's not only a hottie, but also an outstanding hockey player. Many would assume that he's related to current player Andre Roy and / or Hall-of-Famer Patrick Roy, but is not. To learn more about him, read on!!

HOCKEY FACTOR:

  • born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
  • plays center, shoots left
  • played with the OHL Kitchener Rangers
  • named to the 2000 OHL All-Rookie Team as well as the OHL Rookie of the Year
  • named to CHL All-Rookie Team in 2000
  • received CHL Awards (2000): Plus/Minus and Most Sportsmanlike Player
  • part of the Memorial Cup Tournament All-Star Team in 2003
  • won the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy in 2003 (Memorial Cup Tournament - MVP)
  • was Buffalo's second-round draft pick in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft (AND was 32nd overall)
  • spent first 2 years on Buffalo's AHL affiliate team, Rochester Americans (returned in 2004 during NHL lockout)
  • made his NHL debut in 2003
  • re-signed with the Sabres on July 27, 2007 to a reported $24 million / 6-year contract
  • won a silver medal in the World Ice Hockey Championships (in 2000 and 2008)
  • current season: led team in scoring, has 9 multi-point games - including three 3-point games, scored points in 27 / 41 games with 6 game-winning goals
HOTNESS FACTOR:
Roy is a blond-haired, blue-eyed Canadian. He's 5'9 and weighs 188 pounds, so he's pretty short for a hockey player. His nickname is "Royzie."

Family and friends motivate Roy and always keeps in mind that:

"There are a lot of kids out there that would love to play in the NHL so I can not take this opportunity for granted."
Although he thinks there's a lot of great players that are / have been a part of the NHL, he respects players like Steve Yzerman, Peter Forsberg and Eric Lindros.

According to SabreSFan.com, Roy has speed, good vision, and is "a budding playmaker with a bit of an attitude. Shifty, creative and determined enough to compensate for his lack of size."

After this was posted to HftL, I received a comment from sabreschic87 who wrote:
Derek Roy is my favorite Sabre. He is the nicest guy too...I have waited out behind the arena after practice for autographs and such and he always stops and signs things for everyone no matter how many people are there. And the pictures of him that are posted on here are nice...but you should see him in
person...it's even better than the pictures :)

THANKS for the "inside info" sabreschic87!!!

Crosby's 'Knob' - "It's Not Huge, but It's Not Small"

How adorable is Sid cracking up laughing?!!

HUGE THANKS
to loyal
HftL reader, Lauren, for sending a link to this video our way!! For those of you who aren't familiar (which I wasn't until Lauren so nicely introduced it to HftL with this video), the segment is from TheScore.com and called "Cabbie on the Streets." The most recent episode is Cabbie interviewing various hockey players about their hockey stick and of course all the questions are "loaded" with sexual innuendos which makes for really fun banter!

And guess who happens to make an appearance -- none other than our very own Sidney Crosby and it's classic as they discuss his "knob" (on his hockey stick, ladies -- minds out of the gutter, please!) and he even gets Crosby to crack up laughing ("a real, genuine laugh" as Lauren put it!)!!!

This is pretty amusing all around and I'd have to say that my favorites (aside from Sid, of course) are Ryan Getzlaf and Jarret Stoll - just plain silly!! And Mike Commodore keeps a pretty straight face and does fairly well with the whole interview (knows what's going on but it doesn't seem to phase him; plays right along with Cabbie).

See for yourself!!

If You Thought the Pictures were Adorable ...

Get a load of the video -- YES, there IS video of Godard and Staal visiting the Children's Home and Lemieux's Family Center (THANK YOU, PensTV!)!!

ENJOY ladies!!

AS IF We Needed MORE Reasons to LOVE Them!!

THIS IS PART OF WHY THE PENGUINS, AS A TEAM, ARE SO SPECIAL!!

Our boys wear MANY hats (all of which make them so appealing to all of us and the reason each of us have our FAVS); however, charity seems to be high on alot of the boys' lists especially when they take it upon themselves to "give back" (like Gill's idea to visit the Children's Hospital to distribute gifts this past Christmas).

Well, it seems as though Godard also shares in Gill's interest in putting a smile on kids' faces. THIS is too adorable and just reading that it was Godard's idea makes it that much more endearing (Is he a sweetheart or what?! No need to reply to that Kylie -- it's sort of a rhetorical question for you - although I guess it could be for all the ladies!)!!!
“It’s for the kids,” Godard explained. “I can’t put my finger on why I like to do these things, but it’s fun to go and play some games and have some fun with the kids.”
Tuesday afternoon, both Godard and Staal took time to visit The Children’s Home and Lemieux Family Center to spend time with the children and learn more about the Center. They got to tour the facilities followed by a few hours fingerpainting (look at Staalsy's hand compared to the size of that little girl!), playing soccer and basketball, and pushing kids on the swings. [*swoon*]

“Finger painting with the kids was pretty fun and they seemed pretty excited about it,” Staal said. “Just kicking a ball around and playing with them on the playground is really fun, just to see their faces light up and just to enjoy this time. It’s neat.”

“We just came by the Children’s Home and I met a lot of awesome kids who are having fun,” Godard said. “I also met a lot of awesome people who are really putting in their time helping out the kids with all of their needs, so it was a good day.”

“Godard is a great role model,” Staal said. “This is special for the kids and it’s so simple for us to make their day.”

Who Wouldn't Want to Learn How to Cook from Malkin?!!

Especially when it's this fun (watch the video and see another side of Malkin we don't see too often -- I think he's finally "coming out of his shell" and he's even more adorable!)!!

BTW -- for you Tangers fans (and who isn't? -- he's another one of our team teddy bears!), he makes an appearance at the end just in time to sample the results!!

Western Conference Hottie: Antoine Vermette (Columbus Blue Jackets)

For your viewing pleasure and just because I was struck by a strange fancy (thanks for sharing, Stephanie) and actually got a little bit of the hots for a dude with dark hair (YES, I'm laughing at me too) [IDK -- I think I may be swaying Kena over to "the dark side" - pun intended! [laughs]], this weeks Hottie is one Antoine Vermette who is now increasing the WC's hotness quotient by 1 as the result of a trade from OTT Senators to the CBJ Columbus Blue Jackets. [well said, Kena even though the EC gave him to you -- we have enough hotness to spare!!]

IMPORTANT HOCKEY STUFF: He played Jrs. in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) for four seasons, beginning in 1998–99 with the Quebec Remparts. The next season, he joined the Victoriaville Tigres and posted 71 points in 71 games. Awarded the Mike Bossy Trophy at the season's end as the league's top prospect, he was selected 55th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Played 2 more years in the QMJHL. Earning an MJ Career high 112 points his next to last year then battling an injury which kept him sidelined most of his final year. During the 2004–05 NHL lockout, he returned to Binghamton and scored 28 goals and 45 assists, second in team scoring only to Jason Spezza. After his stint in Binghamton during the lockout, He continued to improve, increasing his points total to 39 points, spending the majority of the season on a checking line with fellow penalty-killer Chris Kelly. The duo were rarely apart. On December 2, 2006, he famously scored from behind the net through his legs (plenty can be said for flexibility, right ladies) on the short side against the Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Johan Holmqvist. The goal became well-known around the league and was named TSN's Goal of the Season. During the playoffs, he recorded 5 points in 20 games and helped the Senators to the Prince of Wales Trophy as Eastern Conference champions before losing the Stanley Cup to the Anaheim Ducks in five games. He recorded his first career hat trick on April 3, 2008, against Vesa Toskala in a 8-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF: 6'1" 197lbs. Pretty dark haired French Canadian [LOVE those accents, right ladies!] [OF COURSE!!] So you'll all have to excuse me while I go drool. I'm sorry, but the pictures with this post just simply made me lose my train of thought. Look at that awesome little "I'm a sneaky little boy" grin - SEXY!!! [Kena is just SO AWESOME with descriptive words, don't you think?!!] And that little lock of hair that falls over his eyes at the most opportune of times (like when it'll make him look about 1,000 times hotter). The long lean "swarthy" type. Um, lets see, what else ... of course he's a defensemen what I feel to be the very hottest of "positions" (you naughty girls, but, you are thinking along the same lines as I am so what can I say?) [why doesn't that surprise me?!!] in the game of Hockey.

I SO WISH My Pizza Delivery Guy Looked Like This!!!

According to Katie O'Malley, the big surprise for these construction workers was the FREE Pizza Hut pizza; however, I would consider the BIGGER surprise to be the players who were delivering it!!! What about it, ladies (I can just about guess that Kena would no longer be hungry for pizza if Staalsy showed up at her door with it!)?!!!

Meet Orpik, Godard, and Phil Bourque!

WHEN: Thursday, March 26th (6 PM - 8 PM)
WHERE: Tom Clark Chevrolet in McKeesport

New HftL Poll

Ladies,

From time-to-time, HftL wonders whether or not we're doing a good enough job and if there's anything our readers would like to see more / less of (or if there's something we're missing altogether keeping in mind that our area of expertise is the NHL).

If you haven't noticed, there's a new poll posted on the sidebar to the left asking what you want to see more of on the blog. The first two (and last one) are pretty self-explanatory; however, the choices for "variety" and "other" are choices that would need to be elaborated on, so if this is one of your choices, we ask that you send us an email (at thesteelcitysportsfan@gmail.com) -- or leave a comment ; ) -- to explain your choice and why (making "HftL Poll" the subject).

We're not promising that we'll implement your idea(s), but we'll definitely take them into consideration (again, we know the NHL, so we'd like to stick with that as the main focus of the blog; however, that's not to say we wouldn't have a special post focusing on "subjects" outside the realm now and again). This poll is just a way of seeing whether or not HftL is on the right track with what our readers want on / enjoy about the blog.

THANKS, ladies (let us know what's on your mind)!!

Crosby Pictures of the Week

This week's Crosby pictures are just like potato chips, you can't have just one especially when they're as awesome as these from the previous week's' games.

ENJOY your Crosby fix ladies (I am!)!!

Every Girl's Crazy 'Bout a Sharp-Dressed Man [in a RED Suit]!!

HftL has the BEST READERS!!!

I received an email from Lizzy letting me know about seeing Eric Godard in a red suit and it included a link to the photos of him posted on the Pensblog. I was somewhat concerned seeing as how it IS a red suit; however, our boy was ROCKIN' that suit and looking too fine!!! See for yourself!!

And, YES, we get 2-for-1 on this one -- that is Mr. Jordan Staal walking in with him also looking quite dapper in his suit!!

I swear we're the luckiest female hockey fans around seeing as how the Penguins have some of the most delicious men in hockey on our team!!!

THANKS for the tip, Lizzy (and the Pensblog reader for sharing the pics!)!!!

REASON #13
He's a selfless player who cares for his teammates

ON THE ICE: Just
look at the number of goals compared to the number of assists he has this (or any) season and it's clear that Sid is more willing to pass the puck for a teammate to score rather than scoring himself (currently, Crosby has 92 points this season which is a total of 27 goals and 65 assists).

OFF THE ICE: Listen to what he recently had to say about Malkin (and the possibility of his earning the Art Ross Trophy) - which is only one prime example:
“I think that’s very important,” Crosby said. “You see the guys who have won it here before in Pittsburgh it’s pretty amazing and it would be great to add (Malkin) to the list. I love to see him do well. He deserves it. I’m happy for him and as long as we keep winning I think everyone is happy and when he is playing like that we have a great chance to win.”

HftL Makes it BIG [in Dallas]!!!

Well, in our own minds we've made it BIG!!

Last week, Kena was listening to the Dallas radio station [BaD - no, that's actually the name!] she typically does (mostly because they have a show with her FAV Brenden Morrow), but this particular day they were interviewing Louie Eriksson (a.k.a. "pretty Louie," remember him?! HERE'S Kena's post on him.).

I get an email from her saying that the radio guys interviewing Louie mentioned our blog (not by name, but by one of our [well Kena's] regular posts on the WC Hottie). She was flipping and I honestly could not believe it myself, so we waited for the radio feed to show up online. We both listened and we both thought it was a reference to our post, but we didn't want to make anything out of it because we weren't 100% certain.

Well, today we got the solid confirmation we needed and we're sharing it with you!!! The Stars webpage posted video of the interview (the interview as well as the video are in two parts) and wouldn't you know, it shows CLEAR AS DAY a copy of our post and you can actually SEE the HftL title graphic (Kena took a "screen capture" which is below)!!!! We are just so thrilled that we can't even describe it!!

per Kena, "It's at 7:12 he's holding it in his hand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Kena and I just think this is the neatest thing -- an actual radio station talking to a real NHL hockey player (that Kena wrote about) is discussing / looking at our post (no matter how brief it may have been!)!!!!!! It can't get much cooler than that (and I'm honestly so glad I get to share this with Kena -- or she gets to share it with me -- whichever way you want to look at it)!!

BTW ladies, I'm sure you noticed that Kena doesn't have a post here today. She needed a break since her "real job" has her bogged down, but you can be sure she'll be back next week to introduce you to another hottie from the Western Conference!!

Crosby Picture of the Week

Nothing needs said; the picture says it ALL!!!

Eastern Conference Eye Candy: Vincent Lecavalier (Tampa Bay Lightning)

This week's EC eye candy is quite a talented hockey player which you'll see by the lengthy accomplishments noted in the post (not to mention he's single and RICH!)!!! The guy is pretty (which is why there's so many pics in the post -- I just couldn't choose!)!

HOCKEY FACTOR:
  • born in L'lle-Bizard QC, Quebec, Canada; currently resides in Tampa's Davis Island
  • plays center, shoots left
  • wears number 4 to honor Jean Beliveau
  • featured in "The Rocket: The Maurice Richard Story"
  • attended John Rennie High School and Athol Murray College of Notre Dame
  • referred to as the "Michael Jordan of Hockey" by Art Williams (former Lightning owner)
  • named to QMJHL All-Rookie Team (1997); was also QMJHL Offensive Rookie of the Year (1997)
  • was the Canadian Major Junior Rookie of the Year (1997)
  • named to QMJHL First All-Star Team (1998)
  • named to Canadian Major Junior First All-Star Team (1998)
  • was Tampa Bay's first-round draft pick in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft (AND was first overall!)
  • named the captain of the Bolts on March 1, 2000 (at the time making him the youngest captain in NHL history at 19 years and 11 months old), but was later stipped of the title prior to the 2001-2002 season by HC John Tortorella after demanding more accountability of his players (Lecavalier missed the start of the 2001-2002 season due to contract negotiations)
  • help lead the Lightning win the Stanley Cup Championship in 2004
  • became the first Lightning player to record 50 goals in a season on March 30, 2007 and finished the season with 52 goals
  • named to NHL Second All-Star Team (2007)
  • won Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy (2007) and King Clancy Memorial Trophy (2008)
  • played in NHL All-Star Games (2003, 2007, 2008)
  • signed as a free agent by Kazan (Russia), November 4, 2004 (during the lockout)
  • holds the franchise single season points record for the Lightning with 95 points
  • agreed to an 11-year, $85 million contract extension with the Lightning on July 12, 2008
  • was re-named the captain of the Lightning prior to this season (2008-2009) on September 18, 2008
HOTNESS FACTOR:
Lecavalier is the epitome of a sexy hockey player, ladies (and he's SINGLE!) - just look at him, he's simply YUMMY!!! He's 6'4 and weighs 219-223 pounds, so he's ALL hockey player. His nickname is "Vinny." The night before a game, he always eats steak with mashed potatoes and mushrooms.

He created his own foundation (VL-4 Foundation). He helped create a charitable program benefiting the All Children's Hospital (Kane's 4 Kids) when, in October 2007, he pledged $3 million to the facility which was under construction in St. Petersburg, Florida. The facility will be named the Vincent Lecavalier Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center in his honor.

He spends his off-season in Montreal; plays golf and enjoys boating. He was a fan of the Detroit Red Wings and Steve Yzerman growing up (but I won't hold that against him) and says his most memorable hockey moment was getting drafted by the Lightning first overall in 1998 and winning the Stanley Cup.

Eastern Conference Hottie "Extra"

This comes by request (which you know HftL LOVES!)!!!

Alot of you ladies would like to know a little more about one of the newest members of the Penguins (and the only one of the three newbies that HftL hasn't done yet) - Craig Adams.

Say "hello" to Mr. Adams, ladies!

He is the only hockey player hailing from Seria, Brunei (Brunei is a small, wealthy kingdom on the north coast of the island of Borneo), but he was raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada which is where he discovered hockey. He was drafted by the Hartford Whalers in the 9th round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft (223rd overall) and his rights were later transferred to the Carolina Hurricanes in 1997 (after Hartford relocated). In 2005 he signed as a free agent with the Anaheim Ducks, but just two months later was traded back to Carolina and helped them to become the 2006 Stanley Cup Champions.

Sorry ladies, Craig is married to Anne Cellucci who's father was the former governor of Massachusettes and former US Ambassador to Canada, Paul Cellucci. Craig and Anne have a son named Rhys Argeo. They make a really sweet family. They met each other while they were attending Harvard where Craig majored in history and played hockey (1995-1999). The couple were married in Ottawa.

Here's a recent interview with him on a Penguins "off-day" (03/11/2009):

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Western Conference Hottie: James Wisniewski (Anaheim Ducks; formerly Chicago Blackhawks)

Aside from the fact that he just got traded to the Ducks, we'll be considering him hot as a former member of the Blackhawks and ignore the fact that he now plays for the Ducklings -- who, I might add, have just been soundly whupped by my Stars again [giant grin]. Anyway, onward...

Mr. Wisniewski comes forward for your viewing pleasure as the result of a suggestion from HftL reader, Mackenzie (and I'll just go ahead and say it again for anyone who might be new here. Stephanie and I LOVE requests and the requests don't have to be from the WC either. If their in the NHL, and hot, we'd like to know about them!).

IMPORTANT HOCKEY STUFF: Gold Metals in the World Jr. Championship and the World U-18 Championships in 2004 and 2002 respectively. CHL Defensemen of the year in 03/04 and OHL Max Kaminsky Trophy (yes, I linked this because I didn't know what it was and had to look it up.) in 03/04. According to sources, he wields a very large and powerful... Slap shot (minds out of the gutter ladies) which was good for 17 goals, 11 on the power-play that year. Which incidentally he was named Captain of the Plymouth Whalers as well as posting the above accomplishments.
Wisniewski was called up early to the Blackhawks in the 2006-07 season and has since stuck with the Blackhawks. He tore his ACL (UGH, that's too familiar!) during the 1st period against Los Angeles on March 5, 2007. He was placed on injured reserve and missed the rest of the season. (His rookie season) So he's really just a really good prospect right now. But when he becomes a house hold name, all us ladies will be able to say, "yea, I knew about him back when."

REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF: A pretty pretty 5'11" 189lb blond, [laugh quieter Stephanie, yes, it's another blond guy. I can't help it the NHL is FULL of them! (swoon).] He has a wild side according to Mackenzie, but I didn't uncover any evidence of douchebaggery in my internet wanderings. So we're calling it a "just likes to have fun" wild side, and who doesn't fall for a guy like that. Mackenzie says "I am really upset that he was traded to the Ducks. He was the first hawks player I met at my first game and was an all around wonderful man."

According to Mackenzie, reasons he deserves recognition are 1) Super muscular. 2) Tattoos [I was unable to photographically confirm this but the idea is still tantalizing as always.] 3. Has "pecks of steel" [always important] 4. Out going personality, kind and sweet guy always has time for his fans. 5. [Authors personal favorite, hits a personal spot] Has his own clothing line for charity. [LINK HERE and please do read it, he'll be 3 times as hot once you do.] about which he says “I always like to dress nice and have my own style,” Wisniewski said. “We support the USO of Illinois, the families of fallen soldiers. I wanted to do something a little bit different to set up for a charity than a golf tournament or bowling event. It’s something I can have a little bit of fun with also.”
